Multi-Electrode Electroretinography

Our group has pioneered the development of Contact Lens Electrode Arrays (CLEAr lense) for electroretinography.

The novel CLEAr Lense enables the measurement technique known as multi-electrode electroretinography(meERG). The meERG response consists of several ERG waveforms recorded simultaneously from different locations on the cornea. These meERG waveforms can be analyzed for spatial differences in amplitude or kinetics to reveal spatial differences in retinal function, such as a localized blind spot associated with glaucoma or retinitis pigmentosa. Advantages of meERG recording include high signal quality, short test time, information gathered about entire anatomical retina, use of straightforward full-field stimuli, and no stringent requirement for fixation or ocular clarity.

CLEAr Lens technology has been developed for rat and human eyes; meERG recording is currently being evaluated for sensitivity to local laser damage lesions in rat and for sensitivity to glaucomatous cell loss in humans.

This project is supported by close collaborations with the laboratory of Justin Williams (U of WI) and the Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
