The Eye Cooler

Ocular trauma affecting the retina and optic nerve can be devastating to vision, often due to the finite therapeutic window of opportunity that expires before effective treatment begins. Extending the therapeutic window will help tens of thousands to avoid permanent blindness from a temporary condition. However, there is no existing technique or standard of care for delaying or preventing neuronal loss from ischemic injury in the eye or optic nerve.

The Eye Cooler addresses the significant need for a field-deployable, robust means to achieve and maintain therapeutic cooling of eye tissues following traumatic injury. It is a portable, solid-state device for delivering therapeutic hypothermia to the eye. Applying the device as soon as possible after injury, during transport, and while the patient is awaiting definitive therapy in the hospital helps achieve and maintain therapeutic cooling of the eye tissue following traumatic injury, significantly reduce permanent vision loss.
